KL Railway Station History
KL Railway Station History started before the present building of the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station. There were then already 2 other stations in Kuala Lumpur.
The first one started on 22 September 1886. It was made of wood and a nipah palm roof and located opposite the Selangor Club. It was referred to as the Resident Station due to its proximity to the British Resident's house. It linked KL to Pengkalan Batu, Klang. It also became the hub of the Malayan Railway connecting to the rest of the towns in Colonial Malaya. It was replaced by the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station in 1910.
The second station was built in 1892 at Foch Avenue, now known as Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock. It was called the Sultan Street Station (Jalan Sultan) and located close to the where Maybank Tower and the Puduraya Bus Terminal are today. This station was the main lines for Pudu and Ampang where the biggest tin mines were. It was demolished to make way for modern roads in 1960. *Part of the route used by the Ampang Line LRT uses this old railway line.
The present KL Railway Station building was built at a cost of $23,000 Straits dollars and became operational on 1 August 1910, replacing the Resident Station. It quickly became the main railway station as the Sultan Street Station was isolated.
Opposite the KL Railway Station is the KTM Administrative Building and the National Archives which was previously the grand Majestic Hotel of Kuala Lumpur.
The building saw many phases of renovation and remodeling. In 1986 a new station building was added to interface with the then newly completed Dayabumi complex which housed the General Post Office and the Petronas Headoffice. The Petronas Headoffice has since shifted to its new location at Tower 1, Petronas Towers.
In 1995 the KTM Komuter services started with the Rawang - Seremban route and the Sentul - Port Klang route. Modifications were made to facilitate the easy embarkation and disembarkation of passengers at Platforms 2 and 3 (the middle island platforms).
