Malaysia Flag

Jalur Gemilang or Stripes of Glory
The Malaysia Flag consists of 14 alternating red and white strips of equal width, dark canton, yellow crescent and star. Red and white stripes represent the equal status in the Federation of the 13 states and Federal Government. The canton of dark blue in the upper quarter of the flag sitting on the fifth red strip represent the unity of the people of malaysia.
The canton contains a crescent which is the symbol of Islam. The 14-pointed star symbolizes the unity of the 13 states of the Federation and the Federal Government. The yellow in the crescent and star represents the royal colour of the Rulers.
The flag was designed by Mohamed Hamzah, a government architect who beat 372 others in a national level flag design competition on 28 November 1949.
The flag was officially named Jalur Gemilang or Glorious Strips by the 4th Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad, on 31 August 1997.
