Caught for Khalwat

1st January 2009 Kuala Lumpur

52 unmarried Muslim couples were caught in a raid by the Malaysia's morality police during the New Year Eve celebrations here. They face jail terms of up to 2 years and if found guilty.

Khalwat or being in close proximity with a member of the opposite sex, whom you are not married to, in a private room alone is an offense under the Syariah Laws of Malaysia. This law only applies to Muslims who form about 60% of the population.

Dozens of these moral police went on a hunting spree around budget hotels last night. Most of those caught were students or factory workers.
