Who Will Be The Next MCA President?
KUALA LUMPUR Dec 3, 2009
MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek and vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai are expected to go for the No. 1 post in the party's coming fresh elections, China Press reported today.
According to analysts, party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat is very likely to opt out of the race due to the controversies that is plaguing him and health factors. They opined that even if Ong decides to defend his position, his chances are not high.
Although Chua had earlier indicated that he had no wish to become the president, it will not come as a surprise should he contest the top post given the current situation in the party. It is understood that Liow has a strong desire to contest the presidency, setting the stage for a possible showdown with Chua.
The report said Chua is expected to name either vice-president Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha or vice-president Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen as his running mate. Liow is expected to team up with former secretary-general Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan, who spurred speculation that he is aiming for a comeback with the the high profile he maintained of late.
On the other hand, sources from Chua's team are of the opinion that it would be a perfect combination if Chua has Tee Keat as his running mate.
"If Tee Keat, who is besieged with criticisms from all fronts, is willing to make way for Chua, he has a good chance of winning the No. 2 post as he would have the support of Chua's men."
Another combination that is guaranteed to draw the votes involves Chua and Liow working together but the question is, "who among them wants to be the other's running mate?".
The report also speculated that once the special committee set up for fresh polls decides that the elections are to include both the Youth and Women's wings, Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong and Women's chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun would contest the posts of vice-president (VP).
Given the duo's strength, they will have no problem defending their current posts and remain as VPs by virtue of their positions in the wings but there are differences between being elected VPs and automatic VPs.
Analysts see Wee and Chew as having a fair chance of getting elected as VPs, and Wee who has a good track record to show both in the party and in the government can use the VP post to pace the way to contest the No. 2 post in three years.
Should Wee and Chew contest a VP post, the two wings are expected to see keen contests between Tee Keat's men and Liow's team for the top posts left vacant.
According to analysts, Tee Keat's team is expected to field Youth deputy chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon for the wing's top post whereas Liow's camp is expected to nominate either Youth secretary-general Datuk Chai Kim Sen or legal affairs and parliamentary legislature research bureau chief Wong Nai Chee.
As for the Women's wing, the fight for top post is expected to be between secretary-general Heng Saei Kee, who is aligned to Tee Keat, and deputy chief Datuk Yu Chok Tow of Liow's camp. Heng is expected to have the wing's national organising secretary Tan Cheng Liang as running mate and Yu is likely to pair with vice-chairman Datuk Lee Pit Chern.
