June 2010 - Eye On Melaka to Roll Again? Maybe Not
Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said that The Eye will start to operate again on 1 June 2010 after the legal tussle over the ownership has been solved. The previous operator, Eye On Malaysia Sdn Bhd, would be dissolved. A new operator, Eye Sdn Bhd, will take over the management on a new lease.
There seems to be other legal matters which has yet to be resolved. It thus appears that The Eye may yet not roll as claimed by the Chief Minister. Will keep you updated on this as news comes available.
January 2010 - Eye on Melaka Stops Rolling
Following the suit filed by Fitraco NV, Belgium, against MST Ad Suria to take over the operations of this Melaka attraction, it may be your last chance to try it out. The suit came about after MST Ad Suria, the present operators of the EYE, failed to repay a loan of RM17 million last year.
MST Ad Suria and Eye on Malaysia had entered a joint-venture with Kumpulan Melaka Berhad, a Melaka government subsidiary company, 2 years ago to place the wheels at a theme park in Kota Laksamana.
The suit was filed in September 2009 and the High Court has recently granted an injunction granting the plaintiff interim custody of the wheel.
It cost RM30 million to bring the gigantic ferris wheel to Malaysia. It was first placed in Taman Tasik Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur, during the Visit Malaysia Year 2007. It was moved to Melaka 2 years ago.
It is estimated that the collection of ticket sales is as much as RM5 million since operations started in Melaka on October 2008.
