The importance of Melaka as a trading centre especially for spices in the 15th century was the main factor for the Portuguese to venture to the region and eventually conquering Melaka in the 1511.

Spice Trade

Among the spices traded were black pepper, cinnamon, star aniseed and cumin. Spices labeled 1 to 7:

  1. Dried tamarind or asam keping
  2. Cumin or jintan manis
  3. Black pepper or lada hitam
  4. Coriander or ketumbar
  5. Fenugreek or halba
  6. Aniseed (star aniseed) or bunga lawang
  7. Cinnamon or kayu manis
