Residents Want Tough Government

GEORGE TOWN: Tanjung Bunga
Residents who are fed-up with hill-slope development in their area have warned the state government that they would vote for change if the matter is not addressed.
"We voted for change in the March 8 general election and yet things are the same. Previously, the DAP had been against dangerous hillslope developments but now they are siding with the developers," said Tanjung Bunga Residents Association member Dr Andrew Aeria.
Association vice-president Lee Laine said the association hoped the state would take heed of the complaints and protect their safety and value of their property.
They were among 200 people from the association and management committees of condominiums who gathered at Jalan Chan Siew Teong in Tanjung Bunga calling for the state government to stop all hillslope projects and preserve water catchment areas.
They also urged the state to rehabilitate denuded steep slopes that pose a threat to residents living at the foothills and adhere to the Science, Technology and Environment Ministry's 2002 hillslope development guidelines.
The association had identified several locations in Tanjung Bunga and Batu Ferringhi that it claimed were hillslope projects with gradients of 25 degrees to over 35 degrees.
Tanjung Bunga assemblyman Teh Yee Chew, who was also at the gathering, said that as a backbencher, there were limitations as to what he could do. "However, I will continue to be the voice of the people in all the coming state assemblies," he said.
