Seeking information about literacy in Malaysia
by Bob Rose, MD (retired)
(Jasper, Georgia, Unitred States of America)
My name is Bob Rose. I am a retired physician and reside in Georgia, United States. I have recently been in email contact with Mr Luqman Michel, a retired accountant who lives somewhere in Sabah province.
He,like I am, is interested in curing and/or preventing dyslexia.
He runs an internet blog at www.parentingdyslexia.com
I moderate a yahoogroups.com listserv called k1writing.
Mr Luqman, who speaks Malay, English, Mandarin and Tamil, believes dyslexia occurs in English, but not in these other languages, including pinyin Chinese.
I, on the other hand, believe early reading fluency, irrespective of the writing system, depends on fluency in writing. My own idea is described in the unpublishable manuscript, below.
I am surprized no one has ever done a simple and inexpensive study exploring the possibility that Maria Montessori may have been right.
I was hoping to send this essay to an education professor in Malaysia, but cannot find one by surfing the internet.
I hope the recipient of this message can refer it to such a person. The numbers in the Table column would print out straight in an MS Word form which I could also send.
Sincerely,
Bob Rose
